The North American Animal Liberation Press Office learned on Sunday that Wachovia has sold all their shares involving the notorious animal testing company Huntingdon Life Sciences. Over the past several weeks the press office has received three anonymous communiques stating that illegal actions were taken against Wachovia. The two most recent were received by the press office just a few days ago and stated:

Actions such as these against companies still dealing with the cruel and fraudulent company, have been occurring around the world in increasing frequency, and it appears that animal activists have not given up the campaign to force Huntingdon Life Sciences to end animal testing; a global campaign against the laboratory began seven years ago. Even though some high profile campaigners have been unfairly arrested and jailed for their attempts to expose the dirty secrets of this egregious animal testing company, activists appear to remain relentless in their resolve to see the the goal of SHAC (Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty) achieved.

Huntingdon Life Sciences (HLS), is Europe's largest animal testing company with laboratories in New Jersey and the United Kingdom. In five consecutive undercover investigations, they have been exposed to employ lab technicians simulating sex with the animals, punching beagle puppies and violating numerous animal welfare regulations. The company kills 500 dogs and other animals every day testing such products as oven cleaners, pesticides and pharmaceuticals. Before losing their NYSE listing two years ago, HLS lost their listing on the London Stock Exchange, after UK campaigners exposed atrocities occurring inside HLS facilities.

Please help Rainforest Relief help fight logging of old-growth, tropical rainforests. Below is an action alert with more information about the use of destructively harvested rainforest woods by a Portland developer, and what you can do about it.
Destructively harvested tropical hardwoods - most likely including llegally logged woods - are being used in the interiors of at least two of Hoyt Street Properties' Pearl District condominium developments that are being marketed for their "green" features. These materials, more scorched earth than green, include the mahogany lobby in The Metropolitan, and the "ebony" cabinets and "mahogany" flooring at The Encore.

The wood used in the "ebony" kitchen cabinet veneers is actually a wood from West African rainforests called "obeche" that is coming Cameroon, West Africa. Fully half of all logging in Cameroon is illegal, with serious damage to forests, watersheds, and wildlife. Hoyt claims that the obeche wood they are using for the cabinet veneer comes from responsible sources. They have no proof of this, other than the word of the veneer manufacturer. Cameroon does not have sufficient resources to monitor its forestry concessions, and independent reports have iidentified issues with the sustainability of operations by Alpi, the concession holder and mill operator. Hoyt can't even make a claim of sustainability for the mahogany wood. In Brazil and Peru, the leading suppliers of Latin American mahogany, approximately 60-80% of all logging is done illegally, often in nature reserves or on lands of indigenous people. Damage from logging is combined with construction of logging roads, which then allow forest destruction by ranchers and farmers. Latin American mahogany, unless taken from second-growth forests according to certification procedures of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), is one of the most destructive materials on Earth. Hoyt Street Properties is not using mahogany that is certified under FSC, according to its architect at Boora Architects.

Hoyt has declined several entreaties from Rainforest Relief to stop using tropical woods and develop a rainforest-safe wood use policy. With the high impacts of rainforest logging on biodiversity, carbon storage, and indigenous people, Hoyt is undoing much of the good that it does using other "green" building practices.

None Survive Turkish Plane Crash

ISTANBUL, Nov. 30 — A Turkish passenger jet crashed in the mountains of western Turkey early today, killing all 56 people on board, Turkish authorities said.

The plane, a McDonnell Douglas MD-83 operated by the airline AtlasJet, took off from Istanbul and slipped off the radar shortly before it was due to land in Isparta. It crashed about seven miles from the airport, near the town of Keciborlu, the authorities said.

The cause of the crash remained a mystery. The weather was good, airline officials said. In another baffling detail, the plane crashed in an area that was not on its scheduled route.

“The body of the plane is there as a whole, and the wings don’t exist — I have never seen anything like this,” said Semsettin Uzun, the governor of the province.

An executive from AtlasJet said, “The weather was very good — this seems very suspicious.”

Forty-nine passengers and seven crew members were on board the plane. Among the passengers were six nuclear physicists on their way to a physics conference.

“The point where the plane crashed is not on the plane’s route,” Mr. Uzun said. “We don’t understand how it landed there. It has landed on the other side of the ridge.”

Authorities said that at 1:36 a.m., the pilot told the airport tower he saw the airport runway, and the tower told him to proceed, but that was the plane’s last communication with the ground.

Videotape of the crash site broadcast on Turkish television showed soldiers with guns standing around it. By noon, relatives had begun to arrive, and a woman was shown crying among the wreckage. The black box, which contains details about the crash, was located.

The Associated Press reported that the bodies of some of the passengers were still strapped to their seats.

A villager said, “We thought it was an earthquake.”

The plane appears to have come apart in the air, and different pieces had landed in different places, the authorities said. The Associated Press reported that the plane’s wings and engine were at the top of a hill while the fuselage was 500 feet lower.

Ismail Macika, mayor of Keciburnu, said in a telephone interview that the plane went down at the highest point in the area, a peak of 1,830 meters with a watch tower on top of it.

“Many bodies were taken out of the plane,” he said. “It was easy to get the bodies because the plane did not break into pieces. I saw a few bodies lying on the ground.”
